Tisdahl endorses Hagerty for mayor

Retiring Evanston Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl has endorsed businessman Steve Hagerty to succeed her.

The mayor, in an email message from Florida where she's visiting her newborn granddaughter, said Hagerty "is uniquely qualified to help the city with economic development."

Hagerty, during his over 17 years in Evanston has grown his Hagerty Consulting emergency management business from a startup to having more than 150 employees.

Other mayoral candidates have been picking up endorsements in recent days as well.

Alderman Brian Miller, 9th Ward, has been endorsed by the Chicago Federation of Labor, while Alderman Mark Tendam, 6th Ward, has been endorsed by the Evanston Firefighters Association and by U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky.

Only Hagerty and Tendam have published lists on their campaign websites of their supporters, and Hagerty is far in front on that count, with 709 supporters to 201 for Tendam.

In terms of "likes" on their campaign Facebook pages, Hagerty is leading, followed by Miller, Gaspard, Smith and Tendam.

Hagerty is also in the lead in campaign fundraising, based on reports filed with the State Board of Elections. (In the chart above money provided by the candidates themselves is listed as loans to their campaigns.)

Early voting for the mayoral primary continues at the Civic Center through Feb. 27. Primary election day is Tuesday, Feb. 28.

If one candidate in the primary gets more than 50 percent of the vote, he'll become the next mayor. Otherwise the two top finishers in the primary will face off in the general election on April 4.

Mayoral endorsements

Am I alone in thinking that current office holders should not endorse any of the candidates?  What Liz or Jan or Larry think shouldn't matter, but somehow I suspect each is throwing staff and office resources behind "their guy".

Just what we need, another

Just what we need, another millionaire as Evanston Mayor. Best of luck to all the candidates.

You are alone

Yes, you are alone. It is still a free country and anybody should be able to express their view about a candidate.

What evidence do you have that these office holders are "throwing staff and office resources behind 'their guy'"?

Candidates

Who in their right mind would vote for a candidate just because the mayor says so?  Her opinion is slanted, and people should check out all the candidates.

Mayoral endorsement

I agree it appears to be in very bad form.

Mayoral Candidates

Where can I find information comparing the candidates?  I feel like there has been very little information on your website about what each candidate stands for.  How about a town hall meeting with all the candidates?
