Evanston’s 2nd Act Players to feature 7 new plays, Sept. 23-24

Seven new playwrights will be featured in the 2nd Act Players’ 2017 New Playwrights’ Showcase on Saturday, Sept. 23 and Sunday, Sept. 24.

“The plays range from comedic to dramatic to thoughtful to downright scary, so there will be something for everyone to enjoy,” says 2nd Act Players’ Founder John N. Frank. “We’re doing staged readings of seven short plays at each performance, in keeping with our mission to showcase new talent for the stage.”

The plays are the winners of the 2nd Act Players 2017 Short-Script Competition and are all by current or former Chicago-area playwrights. One of the plays, The Lady in the Woods, will go right from its Evanston performances at the 2nd Act Players to the New York New Works Theatre Festival this October.

The seven plays are:

A Little Something by Jean Waller

People meet at a pawn shop in a transitional urban neighborhood of a large city.

One Woman’s Duty by Scott Carter Cooper

Two sisters wait at the post office for their grandmother’s wedding ring.

Raisin Puffs by Andre Richardson Hogan II

Three men's personal observations regarding an assault on a former classmate.

Spark by Barbara Blumenthal-Ehrlich

Joan’s been dreading this day. Her 25-year marriage with Steve has imploded, and she’s supposed to move out.

The Lady in the Woods by Hyten Davidson

A woman receives a weary hermit forced indoors by a growing storm. Will they survive the night?

The Queen of Social Media by Lawrence Keller

Peter and Dana are just home from the hospital with their new-born baby, Katey. While thrilled, tensions mount as Dana seems a bit preoccupied.

As a special added attraction, a staged reading of 2nd Act Players Founder and Creative Director John N. Frank’s new short play, Peter’s Ticket Booth, also will be part of each night’s performance.

Theater veteran Genevieve Fowler will be directing the staged readings which will take place Saturday, Sept. 23 at 7:30 and Sunday, Sept. 24, at 3:30 at Northminster Presbyterian Church, 2515 Central Park Avenue, Evanston.

A staged reading means actors will read scripts for each play but there is no special scenery or set changes. Tickets for these shows are only $10 when bought in advance, $15 at the door. Advance tickets can be bought on Brownpapertickets.com. Just search for New Playwrights’ Showcase.
