Housing slump hits senior citizens?

I heard an interesting story on the radio today about senior citizens who want to move out of their homes and into retirement communities, but can't sell their houses in today's market.  Has anyone out there had an experience like that?  If so, what have you done about it?  Forgone the retirement community and stayed in the house?  If you made the move anyway, what was your experience like selling your house?
