Library outreach appears to lack buy-in

Evanston's Library Board recently has proclaimed its dedication to outreach to the city's minority and low income communities.

But there was little evidence Wednesday night that those communities are buying into the outreach claim or see it as a reason to back the board's effort to break free from the City Council's budget oversight.

Mosquito spraying in north Evanston

Update 1 p.m. 8/3/10: The North Shore Mosquito Abatement District has announced plans to spray for mosquitoes in Evanston north of Central Street starting at 8 p.m. on Tuesday Thursday night, Aug. 3 5, until 2 a.m. Wednesday Friday morning, weather permitting. Schedule changed because of weather conditions expected Tuesday night.

Parade draws a crowd on Central Street

Evanstonians by the thousands turned out for this afternoon's 89th annual Fourth of July parade. With music from the  North End Bunco, Parchesi, & Weight Dropping Auxiliary, and numerous other groups, the parade filled its promise of a traditional afternoon of entertainment.

Evanston police late this morning issued a news release indicating they still know very little about how a 25-year-old Northwestern University student died in a bathroom at the school's library.

An autopsy today on the body of a Northwestern University student found  Sunday morning in the school's library was inconclusive.

NU student found dead in library

Northwestern University officials say a student was found dead in the university library in Evanston shortly before 10 a.m. today.

In a message to the university community, William Banis, the school's vice president for student affairs, identified the student as a 25-year-old male enrolled in the School of Continuing Studies.

Garden fair continues today on Central Street

The 56th annual Evanston Garden Fair, continuing today at Independence Park on Central Street, exemplifies Ralph Waldo Emerson’s statement that “the earth smiles in flowers.”

Members of The Lincolnwood Garden Club and the urban-agriculture advocacy group The Talking Farm are selling an array of flowers, vegetables, herbs and gardening tools at the fair.
