Evanston police say say holiday decorations have been falling victim to thieves in southwest Evanston.

Two white Christmas trees disappeared from a yard at 732 Florence Ave. and two reindeer vanished from a lawn at 1719 South Blvd. during the day on Monday.

Evanston police arrested four Chicago men early this morning after a resident alerted them to a car burglary in progress in the 1100 block of Washington Street.

Officers searching the area spotted two suspects who initially eluded them, but were later spotted trying to hide in a parked car in the 700 block of Wesley Avenue. A fourth man was detained as he tried to leave the area.

Members of Evanston's Parking Committee learned Wednesday night that the city rakes in about $500,000 a year from taxes it collects on parking fees charged at Evanston Hospital.

That led Alderman Colleen Burrus, 9th Ward, to suggest that city officials should talk to executives at St. Francis Hospital about ending its free parking policy so the city could collect the tax on fees people would pay to park there.

Evanston will have six fewer voting precincts for February's statewide primary than it did for the city elections this year.

Cook County Clerk David Orr says he's trimming the total number of precincts in suburban Cook County by 15 percent to save about $750,000 a year.

The reduction here amounts to 9 percent of what had been 70 precincts in town. In some cases voters will still be using the same polling place, but the polling place will serve fewer precincts.
