Over 500 turn out for youth job fair

The Youth Job Center of Evanston hosted the largest job fair in the organization’s history Thursday. An hour after the fair began, more than 200 enthusiastic job seekers had already lined up inside the Evanston Public Library. By the end of the day, more than 500 job seekers met with 17 currently hiring employers.

A task force of Evanstonians who hope Google will choose our town for the test of the firm's proposed ultra-high speed internet access service meet again at 6 p.m. tonight at the Civic Center to develop the city's application.

Plan, preservation panels balk at merger

Members of Evanston's Plan Commission and its Preservation Commission spoke out Wednesday night against the city manager's plan to merge the two groups.

They were joined, at a meeting of the Plan Commission, by Alderman Coleen Burrus, 9th Ward, who said the merger "doesn't make a lot of sense."

The Evanston Community Foundation is sponsoring a workshop this month to brief board members of non-profit groups on how to provide financial oversight for the organizations they serve.

City officials are scheduled to ask aldermen Monday to seek a federal grant that could lead to renovation of the shuttered Varsity Theater downtown.

Free parking ups holiday garage use

Expanding a free parking offer at Evanston's downtown garages seems to have increased garage usage during the holiday shopping season.

Usage figures presented at this week's Parking and Transportation Committee meeting show parking garage usage increased 6 percent during the Nov. 27 to Jan. 4 run of the promotion last year compared to the same time span in 2008.

Google dream draws a crowd

About 40 Evanstonians gathered in a Civic Center meeting room Tuesday to strategize about how to persuade Google to build a new ultra-high-speed internet service here.

The search-engine giant announced earlier this month that it's seeking information from communities around the country that would like to be the site for a company-funded test of gigabit internet service, and Evanston officials announced last week that they plan to apply.

Representatives of Northwestern University and the local technology incubator joined the session, along with a variety of high-tech business owners, workers and retirees who live or work in Evanston.

Youth job fair next month

The Youth Job Center of Evanston will hold its annual Spring Job Fair from 1 to 4 p.m. on Thursday, March 11, at the Evanston Public Library.

The job fair will offer local job seekers ages 16 and above the opportunity to meet with currently hiring employers including Lowe’s, Marshalls, Payless, Manpower and Rimland NFP.

Hotel Orrington to get Hilton brand

Evanston's Hotel Orrington will convert to the Hilton brand as part of a recapitalization of the property.

Mesa West Capital has provided an affiliate of Greenfield Partners, LLC of Norwalk, Conn., with $14.5 million in first mortgage financing to recapitalize Greenfield's existing loan on the hotel, at 1710 Orrington Ave.

Evanston wants to friend Google

Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl announced today that the City of Evanston will respond to Google's Request for Information to build ultra-high speed broadband networks in communities across America.

Google announced last week its intention to launch ultra-high speed broadband internet networks in one or more trial locations across the country.

Mayor Tisdahl has asked City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz to convene a task force of City staff and interested community members to prepare a response to Goggle’s RFI by the March 26 deadline.  This task force will hold its first meeting at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 23, at the Civic Center.
