Kids Can Learn About Northwest Native Cultures

The Mitchell Museum of the American Indian in Evanston is presenting animated films and craft workshops for kids on Saturdays in March, April, and May, focusing on Native peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast.
 

City seeks grant for performing arts center study

The Evanston City Council voted Monday to seek a $50,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to conduct a feasibility study  of converting a portion of the old Varsity Theater downtown into a performing arts center.

The grant would require a $50,000 local match, which the city plans to take from funds in the Washington National tax increment financing district.

Ice rink developer search approved

Evanston aldermen Monday voted to invite potential developers apply for the job of building and operating a new recreation center in Crown Park.

The aldermen also chose Alderman Don Wilson, whose 4th Ward includes the park, and Aldermen Lionel Jean-Baptiste, 2nd Ward, and Coleen Burrus, 9th Ward, whose wards adjoin the park, as members of a committee to oversee the project.

Dance Marathon raises $854K

More than 1,000 Northwestern University students danced for 30 straight hours at Norris University Center in the 36th annual Dance Marathon over the weekend, netting $854,396 in total gifts and in-kind donations.

City officials are scheduled to ask aldermen Monday to seek a federal grant that could lead to renovation of the shuttered Varsity Theater downtown.

Yummy! 'Lost recipes found'

Strawberry refrigerator cakeEvanston freelance writer Monica Rogers says she's launched her new Lost Recipes Found website.

Rogers, who freelances for the Chicago Tribune and on occasion for Evanston Now, has built her interest in favorite recipes from restaurants that have gone out of business, and in other food favorites from the past, into the new website.

Fridge cakes from the '40s, recipes from restaurants that closed long ago, old-fashioned sweets and stews, everybody's got a "lost" recipe they truly miss, Rogers says, and her site seeks to help find and revive the best of them.

Young artists join 'Art Under Glass' show

For the first time since its inception last June, Art Under Glass, which fills unoccupied storefront windows with the work of local artists, includes Evanston youth in its new exhibit.

Brillianteen, the McGaw YMCA’s theatrical tradition, will present “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” for its 59th annual production next month.

Cast members of the McGaw YMCA's Brillianteen show from days gone by will return to the stage Saturday, March 13, for an alumni revue performance at 7:30 p.m. at King Lab School, 2424 Lake St.

City arts award winners named

The Actors Gymnasium and the founder of Literature for All of Us will receive Evanston's annual award for the arts next Friday during the state of the city luncheon sponsored by the Evanston Chamber of Commerce.

The Actors Gymnasium, founded in 1995, is a school for circus and performing arts dedicated to the education and development of multi-skilled, physical-theatre artists.
