A Chicago man, imprisoned twice before for laundry room burglaries in Evanston, is back in police custody on charges of breaking into another laundry room.

Downed lines cut power, start fire

Update 3:30 p.m.: Two downed power lines in an alley behind 1134 Oak Ave. knocked out power to parts of Evanston this afternoon and touched off a fire in a garage behind the home.

Missing bike light leads to burglary arrest

Evanston police officers on routine patrol early Wednesday morning stopped a man riding a bike with no light near Bridge Street and McCormick Boulevard.

After stopping the man, the officers say, they noticed a cut cable on the bike -- making them suspect it might have been stolen.

City, firefighters reach deal

The City of Evanston and the firefighters union local announced today that they've reached agreement on all outstanding contract issues.

In a joint statement, the parties said the union will recommend that its members ratify the settlement in voting Aug. 30 through Sept. 1 and the city staff will present the agreement to the City Council for a vote on Sept. 13.

Man charged in early morning robbery

A 19-year-old Chicago man has been charged with robbing an Evanston man in the 800 block of Brown Avenue early this morning.

Antoine Walker of the 6200 block of N. Claremont is due in court Saturday for a bond hearing.

Police say Walker and an accomplice approached the 22-year-old Evanston man about 1 a.m. as the man walked  west on Main Street from Dodge Avenue.

Police plan late-night traffic crackdown

Evanston police say they plan to step up late-night traffic enforcement efforts over the Labor Day holiday weekend.

The police say they'll conduct a roadside safety check from 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 3, to 6 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, at "a high volume traffic area" in the city.

Police get state traffic award

Evanston's Police Department continued a long tradition of awards for traffic safety enforcement with a prize from the state police chiefs association.

A tradition was established in 1933 when the National Safety Council awarded the department the National Grand Prize for Traffic Safety.
