'Cash Dash' to help locate unclaimed property

State Treasurer Dan Rutherford's office will hold an event in Evanston designed to encourage residents to check whether the state is holding unclaimed money or property they may be entitled to.

The treasurer's "Cash Dash" program lets residents search online for unclaimed property, including money in inactive savings and checking accounts, unpaid wages or commissions, stocks, bonds and mutual funds and the content of safety deposit boxes.

Rutherford says the state's unclaimed property division has $1.5 billion in cash and on average returns about $80 million annually to owners. Businesses and banks are required to turn over unclaimed accounts to the treasurer's office.

The session in Evanston, which will help residents do online searches, runs from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 19, at the Evanston Township offices, 1910 Main St.
