A new report from the Chronicle of Higher Education says Northwestern’s Morton Schapiro is the 24th highest paid private college president in the nation.

At just over $1.12 million in 2012 compensation, the Chronicle says Schapiro ranked third in Illinois, behind Charles Middleton of Roosevelt University at $1.76 million and Robert Zimmer of the University of Chicago at $1.37 million.

At the top of the national list, Shirley Ann Jackson of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute far exceeded her peers with total compensation of $7.14 million — although that included a $5.9 million retention incentive earned over a decade and paid in 2012.

Only four college presidents topped $2 million in compensation. The median pay for presidents at the 500 schools included in the study was just under $400,000.

The Chronicle compiles the data from publicly available Internal Revenue Service forms filed by the schools.
