Free tours of Dawes House on Monday

The Evanston History Center will host a free open house for the public from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Monday at its headquarters in the landmark Charles Gates Dawes House at 225 Greenwood St.

All visitors are welcome to tour the former home of the 30th vice president of the United States, who lived in the house from 1909 to 1951. Dawes served as vice president in the Coolidge Administration, from 1925 to 1929.

The house was built by Robert Sheppard in 1894 and has been photographed extensively, including its exterior in the 2002 motion picture “Road to Perdition,” starring Tom Hanks and Paul Newman. Its interior was cast as Chicago’s famous Playboy Mansion in a CBS television series in 2011.

The three-and-a-half-story mansion has 25 rooms, six bedrooms, seven bathrooms, and 11 fireplaces.

The permanent exhibit documenting Evanston's history, “Milestones and Memories,” will be open to all visitors during the open house.
