23 apply for vacant school board position

Some 23 persons have applied for the Evanston/Skokie School District 65 board seat to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Omar Brown, according to Board President Suni Kartha and Vice President Anya Tanyavutti.

The number of applicants is higher than for each of the three most recent vacancies, they said in response to an  inquiry from Evanston Now. In fact, Brown was appointed to the board in 2014 to fill a vacancy caused by the resignation of Eileen Budde.

“We are so pleased with the strong response and grateful that there is such interest in serving our students and schools,” they said, crediting the interest “to a community dedicated to a strong public school system committed to serving all children.”

Interviews with the finalists took place with the entire board this week. The applicant selected will be sworn in at the regular board meeting scheduled for August 21, Kartha and Tanyavutti said.
