Evanston has held a 4th of July parade on Central Street for nearly a century now, and today the tradition continued.

  1. What a great job by Evanston
What a great job by Evanston city services and the Evanston Fourth of July Association for providing a full day’s worth of enjoyment. Park activities were great, parade (while always too political) was very entertaining, and the fireworks are consistently the best on the North Shore. EPD properly deployed at lakefront and people behaving civilly. Thanks too all who worked hard to make it happen.

    1. If you enjoyed . . .

Thanks emm vincent! We work hard all year to put together a full day of activities for kids of all ages. The City (and our tax dollars) definitely support the activities, with police, life safety, streets and sanitation, traffic and other departments, the actual activities are all funded by the Evanston Fourth of July Association, a volunteer-run not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization, founded on 1922 by the North End Mothers’ Club. That’s right – we (your friends and neighbors, and maybe even you) have been doing this for 96 years!

So, if you enjoyed the Playground Activities at one of the eight locations, or had a child participate in the Fun Run on Central St., or enjoyed the two(!) out-of-state marching bands, as well as the girl-, cub-, and boy-scout floats, the huge variety of community groups, the performing groups large and small in the Parade, listened to the fantastic live Concert by the Palatine Concert Band at the Arrington Lakefront Lagoon, or oooh’d and aaah’d over our 23-minute-long fabulous Fireworks display, please remember that without your generous contributions, we can’t do all of this.

Please visit http://www.evanston4th.org and give what you can. Mail can be sent to PO Box 1898, Evanston IL 60204. All donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

Thank you for your continued support of and participation in this 96-year-old Evanston tradition!

  2. poor horses

I love the parade, love that it’s got so many entrants, loved the fireworks in the evening.  The only thing that was very concerning was the lack of competant supervision of the horses.  They were tied to trees in 82 degree humid conditions and were obviously very distressed with all the noise, people, dogs, vehicles, strollers walking all around where they were.  They were neighing in what sounded like a screaming manner and their “caretakers” were just meandering around oblivious.  The liability alone for the parked cars they were next to and the pedestrians they could have kicked would have been huge.  Please make sure they are better taken care of next year.

    1. Horses Were Fine

I was standing across from the horses for most of the parade while they were waiting to go.  They were fine.  No problems whatsoever.
