Now that Evanston has provided protected on-street bike lanes on some downtown streets, the City Council tonight will consider raising the fine for riding bikes on sidewalks in designated business districts.
The proposed increase is from $15 to $25. City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz says he hopes the increase will improve compliance with the law.
The aldermen will also consider raising the fine for motorists who use a cell phone while driving from $50 to $75. That change would make the city ordinance violation penalty match the similar provisino in state law.
