Volunteers log 89,000 hours so far

Volunteer  Evanston, the city group that has set a goal of 150,000 volunteer hours by the end of the city’s 150th year, has already surpassed the halfway mark at 89,000 hours.
The organization, whose partners include the Evanston Community Foundation, the city, Northwestern University, and the two school districts, was set up to promote volunteer opportunities for city residents.
Organizers recognized the following recent events that logged some major hours to help the cause:
Interfaith Action of Evanston. Since January, volunteers have logged 3,792 hours by providing multiple services to homeless people in the area, including food service, counseling and computer training.
The YWCA's Ricky Byrdsong Memorial Race Against Hate, in its 14th year, it had over 5,000 participants and more than 300 volunteers. The volunteers, which included employees from Allstate, Enterprise, Lululemon, ETHS sports teams and the Youth Organizations Umbrella, had a significant impact in accumulating more than 1,000 voluntter hours.
Evanston Fourth of July Association. It provided playground activities across the city during the day and organized the parade down Central Street. Volunteers donated 618 hours to make the day a success.
Salvation Army Evanston. Volunteers have logged 744 hours through helping at the summer camp and as a front-desk receptionist.
Civic Center Front Desk Greeters. These people help patrons find the answers they are looking for when they enter the Civic Center.   Since January, these four women have logged 800 hours collectively. 
Literature for All of Us. This organization has logged 1,410 hours since February by providing book discussion groups to teen parents and other youth in Evanston.
2013 Mayor's Summer Youth Job Fair. This event helps Evanston high school students to find summer employment with Evanston businesses.  Over the course of two days, 30 volunteers logged 154 hours.
New volunteers are invited to sign up for the program, and to log their volunteer hours, on the organization’s website.
