Evanston liquor store fined for underage sales

Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl says she'll fine Evanston 1st Liquors $2,000 for selling alcohol to underage customers.

The Daily Northwestern reports that the mayor, who also serves as the city's liquor commissioner, imposed the fine after a hearing Thursday at which city officials said police have stopped a dozen underage customers outside the store so far this year.

That compares, they said, to just one violation in 2010, before the store's current owner, Amit Amin, purchased the business last August.

Amin said he's doing all he can, but city officials said in one instance a 16-year-old Winnetka youth was allowed to buy liquor without presenting any identification at all.
