An Evanston man is due in court next week after police spotted him running through a local park on Christmas Eve carrying a black bag and a green pillowcase.

Police say they were responding to a call about a suspicious person in the 1100 block of Lincoln Street when they saw a man later identified as 53-year-old Donald Alen Chastang of 1310 Foster Street running through Leahy Park.

When the officers tried to confront Chastang, police say he dropped the bag and pillowcase and ran off, but they were able to capture him nearby.

Police say they found various items of stolen electronic gear in the pillowcase and that Chastang had a burglar’s tool in his possession.

The state’s attorney’s office has charged Chastang with possession of burglary tools and property theft. He’s scheduled to appear in Skokie district court on Jan. 7
