Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky says she’s endorsing Robyn Gabel in the Democratic primary for the Illinois House seat now held by Julie Hamos.
“Robyn stands up for what she believes in,” said Schakowsky. “We know how effective she is in actually getting things done. She will be able to hit that ground running, which is what we need in our district.”
Schakowsky, who is traveling to Afghanistan as part of a Congressional mission, made the remarks on video to supporters gathered at Gabel’s new campaign office at 906 Sherman Ave. for the official kick-off of her campaign.
Gabel has served as executive director of the Illinois Maternal and Child Health Coalition for the past 20 years. She helped design healthcare legislation that has provided healthcare to 1.4 million uninsured Illinois children and their parents.

Gabel said she hopes to follow in the tradition of progressive leadership in Springfield set by Hamos and Schakowsky who held the state house seat from 1991 and served until Hamos succeeded her in 1999.
“I hope to follow in their footsteps by continuing to fight for our children, families and community,” she said.
Gabel grew up in Rogers Park and Skokie and lives in Evanston.
The district covers most of Evanston, and parts of Wilmette, Winnetka, and the Rogers Park neighborhood in Chicago.
Hamos is leaving the state house to run for the U.S. Congress in the 10th District.
Once again, another elected
Once again, another elected official telling us all who we should vote for before there’s even been one debate between the candidates for Julie Hamos’ position. I plan to vote for the candidate who runs for office and says, “If elected, I won’t presume to tell you all who to vote for until 30 days before the election.” While as a candidate I’d understand why you’d want an endorsement from a current officeholder, as a voter I find it offensive that our current elected officials can tell us who to vote for before there’s even been one debate. I like to think that we’ve elected to office open minded and independent thinkers, yet with these ridiculously early endorsements it doesn’t appear that way.

True…but since the rest of the machine is lining up behind Jeff “Evanston has too many people” Smith, we can’t wait until 30 days before the election.
We need to find the most viable opponent of the Evanston Machine and unite behind that candidate (even if it means dealing with Schakowsky’s Machine).
I don’t care whether who the candidate is…but we need to find one progressive candidate.
