Fire strikes car wash

Update 6:30 a.m. 2/22/13: A fire broke out around 6:45 p.m. Thursday evening at the Suds car wash on Green Bay Road.

Evanston Fire Chief Greg Klaiber says a passerby reported seeing smoke and called 911.

Klaiber says Engine 21 from the fire station nearby on Emerson street arrived on the scene in less than two minutes.

They saw smoke inside the closed and unoccupied car wash building at 2212 Green Bay Road. Firefighters forced entry to the building and found two industrial dryers and their contents on fire and successfully contained the fire to the dryers with minimal damage to the rest of the building, Klaiber says.

Klaiber says no injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation. He said he believes the car wash should be able to reopen today or Saturday.
