Unbuckled seatbelt leads to hijacked car's recovery

Evanston police say a traffic officer sitting in his squad car at Howard Street and Asbury Avenue about 7:54 p.m. Sunday noticed that a front-seat passenger in a Hyundai driving southbound into Chicago wasn't wearing a seat belt.

Cmdr. Joseph Dugan says the officer ran the plate on the car and learned it had been stolen in a vehicular hijacking with a weapon in Chicago the day before.

Dugan says the officer followed the car, occupied by seven people,  until backup, including Evanston and Chicago police units arrived near Touhy and California avenues.

When the police tried to stop the car there, it took off westbound. The driver and passengers bailed out of car in the 3100 block of Touhy.  Six male juveniles from Chicago were taken into custody. One female was not apprehended.
