The City of Evanston will try out new traffic restrictions at the intersection of Ridge Avenue and Greenwood Street starting next month to try to make the intersection safer.

The test is scheduled to run from May 3 throgh October.

The new rules will require that from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. eastbound and westbound traffic on Greenwood only turn right onto Ridge. Left turns or going straight through the intersection will not be allowed.

The trial implementation will let the city evaluate whether the modifications improve the safety and operations at this intersection before considering permanent changes.

The restrictions are similar to ones implemented last year at Ridge Avenue and Grove Street, except that at that intersection drivers on Ridge were also barred from turning onto the side street.

  1. No left turns, how about a left turn light

I am not opposing the no left turn at Greenwood for safety purposes. However, I do need to turn left there or at Lake as do so many other people in the morning. Can we get a signal at Lake with a turn arrow please to reduce traffic flow during morning rush? Ridge is so congested with people who need to turn left going southbound before dempster and now our option will only be church and Lake, and Lake does not have an arrow at the light. Let’s face it church is already congested with downtown traffic. I see people everyday darting through at the Lake light as well to make that left turn since there are no left turns at Grove any more. Can’t imagine that is going to get any better with the close of greenwood. Unfortunately I will now be one of those in line to make that turn. Help us City of Evanston! Put in a turn arrow on Lake.

    1. Left Arrows

I hope consideration will be given for left turns and it happens so that you don’t have to wait 1 at a time before the light changes.  Also, it would be helpful for a left arrow for traffic on Howard that wait to turn into Dodge Ave going north into Evanston.  For years there has been a bottleneck  of traffic.  Chicago Ave north traffic turning left going WEST on Dempster AND Main during rush hours as well.  .

  2. Right turn only

There maybe more accidents entering Ridge from Greenwood/Grove but the problem is the same  up and down Ridge. (Madison,Reba ,South for a few)   Left turn take longer. You have same problem coming out of parking lots onto busy streets

  3. You also put in a No Left

You also put in a No Left Turn sign at the southbound street from NU along the lakefront  (not called Sheridan) into Burnham Place.  That sends lots of traffic, including morning rush hour, past Lincoln School, a site with an abundance of children.

And recall, at this time, the wonderful plan you installed on Dodge, and then had to redo.  Do you have the same staff on street planning?
