A 27-year-old Chicago man was killed when he was struck by a car at Howard Street and Ridge Avenue in Evanston about 7 a.m. today.
Police say they are investigating reports from witnesses that the victim may have been a homeless person who’d been warming himself in the gas station on the corner, and that he appeared to walk into the street and lay down in the road before he was hit.
“That’s one of the possibilities that investigators are looking at,” said police spokesman Perry Polinski.
Traffic between Elmwood and Ridge on Howard was blocked for several hours as officers from the regional Major Crash Assistance Team investigated the accident.
The victim was taken by paramedics to St. Francis Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The vehicle that struck the man was still at the scene when officers arrived.
Update 10:50 a.m. 2/4/18: Evanston police say the Major Crash Assistance Team is continuing its investigation of the fatal accident Wednesday morning at Howard and Ridge.
Police say there are indications that the victim, Antoine S. Jones of Chicago, may have laid down on the roadway just prior to being struck.
No citations or charges have been filed at this time against the 23 year old female driver, also of Chicago.

This is such a tragedy. There are two victims here: the young man who died and the driver who will be forever traumatized for having killed him.
