A 31-year-old Evanston man has been charged with unlawful use of a weapon by a felon after a traffic stop by Evanston police.
Cmdr. Ryan Glew says that about 7:22 p.m. Friday officers in the 800 block of Howard Street noticed a Chrysler Pacifica that didn't have a functioning license plate light.
Glew says officers performed a traffic stop on the vehicle at 1325 Howard and detected an odor of cannabis coming from the SUV.
That led them to search the car, and Glew says they found a loaded handgun under the front passenger seat.
The passenger, Steven C. Dykes, 31, of 1818 Brown Ave., and the driver were taken into custody and transported to the police station, where Dykes, Glew says, later admitted to being in possession of the gun.
Dykes, in addition to the felony weapons charge, also faces a misdemeanor charge of possessing a handgun and ammunition without a firearm owner's ID card.
The driver was issued a traffic citation and released.
