Citizen alerts cops to burglary of taxi

A citizen who flagged down officers early yesterday and told of seeing someone break the window of a taxi was credited by Evanston police with the subsequent arrest of a Chicago man who was charged with burglary.

The incident occurred at about 1:42 a.m. near Howard Street and Callan Avenue.

The taxi was parked on Howard Street near Seeley Avenue, east of Ridge Avenue, where the officer discovered a window broken out on the front passenger side.

A subject matching the description given by the citizen was seen in the area and fled on foot when the officer attempted to stop him, according to Cmdr. Joseph Dugan.

The officer took the suspect, identified as Kenneth T. Hamner, 30, of 2040 W. Birchwood, into custody in the 2000 block of Birchwood, Dugan said, and he was carrying a Samsung tablet computer and a watch that was positively identified by the owner of the taxi, according to Dugan.

Hamner was transported to the Evanston Police Department and charged with one count of felony burglary to a motor vehicle.
