Walking event kickoff set for May 20

The 10th anniversary of Evanston’s We’re Out Walking event (WOW), a 12-week campaign promoting health, wellness, community, and physical activity, kicks off Saturday morning, May 20, at Evanston Township High School.

Sponsored by the city’s Health & Human Services Department, WOW is promoted to people of all ages and fitness levels.

The kickoff orientation session will be held from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the high school, where free parking is available, and will include a group walk, finess demonstrations, local vendors, guest speakers, giveaways, and more, according to a city news release.

WOW runs from May 20 through August 13. There is a fee of $10 per person and $9 for each additional family member.

Registration, which can be done via the city’s website, includes participation in group walks, health and fitness classes, a WOW t-shirt, and connection to a supportive walking community, according to the release.

Organizers contend that regular physical activity at moderate intensity levels improves health and well-being, reduces stress, and decreases the risk for certain diseases and that such physical activity does not need to be strenuous to be beneficial.
