A genetic tendency to depression is much less likely to be realized in a culture centered on collectivistic rather than individualistic values, according to a new Northwestern University study.

In other words, a genetic vulnerability to depression is much more likely to be realized in a Western culture than an East Asian culture that is more about we than me-me-me.

A chess tournament open to all Evanston kindergarten through 8th grade students will be held on Saturday, Nov. 14 at Lincoln Elementary School, 910 Forest Ave.

Player check-in begins at 8:30 a.m., with the first round starting at 9:30 a.m..

The tournament is open to all students in the age group who either live in Evanston or attend school in Evanston.

All dressed up for last year's Project Pumpkin event.A Northwestern University student group plans to host more than 1,000 children at a Project Pumpkin trick-or-treat session at NU's Norris University Center Thursday.

The free event is open to the public and NU faculty and staff are encouraged to bring their children. Project Pumpkin fliers have also been distributed at Evanston/Skokie School District 65 schools.

The event runs from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Norris Center, 1999 Campus Drive.

The Northwestern Community Development Corps, the student group organizing the event, has also invited children involved with after-school programs at local community centers to participate.
