Health center would need to serve more than Evanston

County Commissioner Larry Suffredin says plans by Evanston city officials to set up a Federally Qualified Health Center in Evanston have hit a bit of a roadblock: There aren't enough needy people in Evanston to meet rules for establishing such a facility.

Mosquitoes with West Nile Virus found here

The North Shore Mosquito Abatement District says a pool of mosquitoes from Evanston has tested positive for West Nile Virus, the first such test result in the city this year.

There have been 28 positive test results statewide so far this year with no human cases reported.

Schakowsky backs public option health bill

U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky of Evanston today announced introduction of H.R. 5808, the Public Option Act.

The bill, introduced with 128 original co-sponsors, would establish a public health insurance option that would compete with private insurers in the Health Insurance Exchanges created by the Affordable Care Act, Schakowsky said in a news release.

Bill targets harmful chemicals in cosmetics

U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky of Evanston is among the sponsors of legislation introduced today that she says will close major loopholes in federal law that allow companies to use virtually any ingredient in cosmetics and personal care products—even chemicals that are known to damage human health and the environment.

Aldermen debate rec program costs

Evanston aldermen Monday debated the size of the taxpayer subsidy involved in running the city's youth recreation programs.

During a program review, Parks, Recreation and Community Services Director Doug Gaynor said that the recreation programs cost the city $7.6 million a year while bringing in nearly $3.8 million in revenue, mostly from registration fees.

City to consider more outdoor events

In the midst of the summer event season, Evanston aldermen tonight will consider whether the town needs more outdoor special events.

The City Council holds a special meeting at 7 p.m. at the Civic Center to review its policies, which now limit the number of events held on the lakefront to a dozen and limit the number of vendors at lakefront festivals.
