Evanston Township High School is inviting middle school youth to shake off the cold by participating in the Evanston Middle School Multi-Sport Challenge on Friday, Jan. 3.

The free program is a response to community interest to provide more opportunities for students during the holiday break. Both boys and girls in grades sixth, seventh and eighth are invited to register for this event, which allows them to play three different sports of their choice.

Girls are able to participate in the following sports: cross-country, golf, tennis, volleyball, basketball, cheerleading, gymnastics, soccer and softball. Boy’s options run the gamut and include cross-country, football, golf, soccer, basketball, bowling, gymnastics, lacrosse, tennis, track and field and volleyball.

Students will work directly with ETHS coaches and athletes.

“This program is important because it provides younger student-athletes with an opportunity to learn about and enjoy more than just one sport,” said Chris Livatino, ETHS athletic director.  “We want kids–and parents–to realize they can and should be involved in multiple sports because it’s good for your health, good for socialization, good for academics and just fun!  We also just want kids to have something to do over break that’s positive and not connected to a gadget or gizmo.

“It also gives parents a chance to enjoy three-and-a-half hours of down-time,” he added.

The Multi-Sport Challenge takes place at Evanston Township High School, located at 1600 Dodge Ave. in Evanston. Participants will enter through Door 50 at the rear entrance of the building (near the bike cage). Boys will participate from 8:30 a.m.-noon; and girls will go from 12:30-4:00 p.m.

Registration can be found at http://www.eths.k12.il.us/athletics/middle_school_sports_challenge.aspx and includes a waiver for parents and students. The deadline for free registration is Jan. 2.
