Evanston reported 12 new COVID-19 cases today for a total of 273 while statewide there were 1,826 new cases for a total of 36,934.
Chicago reported 679 new cases for a total of 15,073.
Evanston’s death count from the coronavirus remains at eight while Chicago saw 37 additional deaths today for a total of 641 and the statewide death count increased by 122 to 1,688.
Skokie reported 11 new cases today for a total of 360 and its death count remained unchanged today at 16.
The new case count statewide was the the third highest of any day in the pandemic so far, and Dr. Ngozi Ezike, the state health director, said that increase was largely the result of a recent increase in the number of daily tests performed.

Nealry 9,000 new tests were reported today — giving today the second highest number of tests in the state so far.
Dr. Ezike noted that the percentage of positive tests continues to run at about 21 percent of all tests conducted.
Gov. J.B. Pritzker, who had previously set a goal of conducting 10,000 tests a day said today that ideally the state should be performing many times that number of tests — but that given the continuing shortage of testing supplies he hasn’t yet set a next level target for testing.
