Evanston police say burglars hit the jackpot when they broke into an apartment in a building at 101 Ashland Ave. Monday.
Cmdr. Ryan Glew says officers responding to a burglar alarm about 6 p.m. found the rear door ajar. When they went inside they found the master bedroom of the apartment in disarray.
When the woman who lived in the apartment arrived home from work, she told officers the thieves had stolen $100,000 in cash, 20,000 in euros, $10,000 in jewelry and the family’s passports from a safe bolted to the floor of the bedroom’s closet.
Police say they haven’t located any witnesses and have no leads on suspects.
