The TJX Companies announced today that the A.J. Wright store in the the Evanston Plaza shopping center is one of 71 stores it is closing permanently.

In a consolidation move, TJX is rebranding the other 91 A.J. Wright stores into T.J. Maxx, Marshalls or HomeGoods outlets.

TJX says the consolidation will let the company focus on its larger, more profitable businesses.

The company already has a T.J. Maxx store just 1.5 miles away at 3337 Golf Road in Skokie.

The A.J. Wright store in the Evanston Plaza, at Dempster Street and Dodge Avenue, is adjacent to the Dominick’s supermarket.

It’s expected to close in either January or February.

Company-wide about 4,400 workers are expected to lose their jobs as a result of the closings, which also affects two company distribution centers.

Another empty storefront at Dempster and Dodge—no shock there! Maybe it is time to go after H&M and TRADER JOE’s which would appeal to a wide range of Evanston shoppers. Nordstrom Rack or Steinmart , here is your golden opportunity. This plaza has been in dire need ever since losing Toys R Us as an anchor. It is certainly time for a great breakfast place, deli or a Claim Jumpers and some family geared clothing stores to step in.  Some good planning and invitations to join our community should be issued to places we would like to have in Evanston.
