Evanston health officials reported 22 new COVID-19 cases among Evanston residents today. Statewide there were 4,554 new cases, a one-day record.
That tops the previous record of 4,015 set just on Thursday.
(On Sept. 4 the state reported 5,368 cases, but that total included catching up on a substantial backlog of tests.)
The highest one-day case count reported by Evanston health officials was 27, recorded on May 7.
The seven-day positive rate statewide now 5.1%, up from 3.8% a week ago. The Illinois Department of Public Health today said 34 counties are considered to be at a warning level for COVID-19. That’s up from 26 counties a week ago. None of the counties under warning are in the Chicago metro area.
IDPH reported results of 87,759 tests today, up from Thursday’s 67,086. The state this week started reporting antigen tests, as they became more widely available, in addition to the molecular tests it has been reporting for months. That accounts for some of the jump in test results reported today.
Today’s test count is an all-time high for the pandemic so far. Officials say the increase in testing does not fully account for the increase in positive cases.
The IDPH reported tests of 705 Evanston residents today. It found 23 positive cases for a positive rate of 3.3%, compared to the seven-day average of 2.6%. A week ago, the seven-day rate for Evanston was 1.5%.
The state now says Evanston has had a total of 1,271 cases.
The city now says Evanston has had a total of 1,272 cases The city’s death toll from the pandemic remained unchanged today at 73.

Chicago reported 774 new cases today for a total of 87,575. Its coronavirus death toll increased by five today to 3,007.
Suburban Cook County reported 836 more cases today for a total of 73,070 and three more deaths for a total of 2,332.
Those who died in Cook County today included a woman in her 40s, three men in their 50s, a woman in her 70s and two women and one man in their 80s.
The state now has 336,174 COVID-19 cases, and it reported 38 more deaths today for a total of 9,165.
As of last night, 2,016 people in Illinois were reported to be in the hospital with COVID-19. Of those, 410 patients were in the ICU and 151 of those were on ventilators.
