About $6 million in summer construction work at several schools is scheduled to be approved by the District 65 Board of Education at its meeting this evening.

The district is scheduled to award contracts for $5.7 million for life safety and building renovation work to 11 different contractors and an asbestos abatement contract for $272,800 to Universal Asbestos Removal, Inc. of Lemont.

The asbestos work is to be done at Chute, Dawes, Dewey, King, Lincolnwood, Nichols and Walker schools.

The other building improvements — including door and hardware work, flooring, temperature controls and locker improvements — are planned at Chute, Dawes, Haven, King, and Nichols schools and the district administration building.

Update 10 a.m. 3/16/10: The board approved the contract awards Monday night. The work is part of a multi-year improvement program funded by proceeds from bond sales.
