An accident about 2 p.m. today at Asbury Avenue and Lincoln Street in Evanston left a car part way down the wooded North Shore Channel embankment.

A neighbor said she heard a collision, but didn’t actually see what happened to cause the car to end up on the embankment.

Asbury Avenue is interrupted at Lincoln Street, its southbound route route blocked by the canal.

Update 4:30 p.m.: Evanston Police Cmdr. Joseph Dugan says the driver of the car, a 51-year-old Evanston woman, apparently suffered some sort of medical problem as she was driving south on Asbury toward Lincoln Street. She apparently fainted and the next thing she knew her car had jumped the curb and rolled down the embankment.

Dugan says the woman suffered a minor cut to her arm when the car’s airbag deployed, but otherwise was uninjured. She was not hospitalized, Dugan says, and no traffic citations were issued.
