All police units to get Tasers

Police Chief Richard Eddington will ask Evanston aldermen tonight to approve buying 30 more Taser weapons to be able to equip every on-duty police unit with the gear.

The department now has 19 Tasers in operational condition, Eddington says in a memo to aldermen, and as part of the new contract with Taser, will be trading in 12 other units that are no longer operational.

The new model X26P units will also be equipped with high definition video recorders.

The $60,000 cost of the new equipment is to come from the city's reserve account from narcotics seizures.
