For the second day in a row Evanston set a record today for new reported COVID-19 cases — showing 21 new cases today, up from 19 on Friday.

The city also reported one additional coronavirus death, raising the total for the pandemic here to 11.

The total count of cases in Evanston now stands at 378. Chicago reported 898 new cases for a total of 23,616. Across Illinois there were 2,450 new cases for a total of 58.505.

Chicago reported 33 more deaths today for a total of 978. Across the state there were 102 additional deaths for a total of 2,559.

The state reported conducting 15,208 additional COVID-19 tests today, for a total of 299,896. The percentage of people testing positive today stood at 16.1%, down substantially from the 21.2% reported on Friday.

At the governor’s news conference this afternoon Dr. Ngozi Ezike, the state’s public health director, said the wide variation in the percentage of positive cases from day to day could stem from variation in the backgrounds of the people being tested. If more results came from nursing homes that would lead higher numbers than if the day included many results from a drive-thru testing center that might be testing symptom-free persons who are at risk because of where they work.
