Evanston police say they captured a bank robbery suspect a half mile from the scene of the crime Tuesday afternoon.
Police say a lone robber entered the Fifth/Third Bank at 2440 Main St. about 2:15 p.m. and handed a teller a note demanding money and claiming he had a weapon.
The teller gave the robber an unknown amount of currency along with an exploding dye pack.
The robber then fled the bank on foot.
A police officer who’d heard a radio call about the robbery spotted a man matching the description of the suspect and stopped him just across the city line in the 3200 block of Oakton in Skokie.
The police say witnesses to the robbery identified the suspect and that officers also located clothing the robber had thrown away along with cash from the robbery.
The suspect, described as a 27-year-old man from the Philippines, has been turned over the the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
An FBI spokesman contacted this afternoon was unable to immediately provide further identification of the suspect or information about whether charges have been filed.
Update 9/12/08: Evanston police now have identified the man arrested as Anatacio P. Hernandez, 27, of 9268 Barberry Lane in Des Plaines.
