Police have charged a Evanston Township High School student with criminal sexual abuse after another student accused him of forcing her to have sex in a school restroom.

Evanston Police Commander Tom Guenther says that during the police investigation of the Tuesday incident the 14-year-old girl changed her story and indicated that at least some of the activities she initially said the 17-year-old boy had forced her to do were actually consensual.

Police also obtained video surveillance footage that they say helped clarify the nature of the incident.

Guenther says the state’s attorney’s office, after reviewing the evidence, declined to approve felony charges in the case, based on the inconsistencies in the victim’s statements, but the youth was charged with misdemeanor criminal sexual abuse, because the girl is under the age of consent.
