Ten Scouts from Evanston’s Troop 916 will be trekking 100 miles over 10 days at the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico this summer, thanks to the overwhelming success of their BBQ Feast fundraiser Sunday.
Evanston Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl opened the sold out event for 140 guests at Oldershaw Hall, saying she counts on the scouts as part of the Evanston the community.
Hecky’s BBQ owner Hecky Powell provided food as the main sponsor, while Brothers K supplied coffee.
And Powell surprised the group by announcing that with thanks for the positive influence of the Scouts in Evanston, he would fully fund the event, enabling the Scouts to reach 100 percent of their fundraising needs.
The Scouts are now training for the August mountain trek with weekly ten mile urban treks, each carrying 30 lbs of gear.
From their Philmont, New Mexico, hiking experience, they plan to produce a photographic calendar for 2013.

Impressive Challenge and Response
The Scouts are taking on a significant challenge in this 100 mile hike through Philmont. And Hecky has impressed us all in his encouragement and support of the Scouts' in their endeavor. Well done, all!
Great job!
I was at this event and it was really Evanston at its best. Thanks to Hecky Powell and Evanston's best coffee shop, the Brothers K.
