Former Evanston 4th Ward alderman Steve Bernstein has announced he’s seeking election as a circuit court judge.

Bernstein, of 943 Elmwood Ave., served three terms on the City Council and chose not to run for re-election last spring.

Now an attorney with the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority, he formerly ran a private law practice in Evanston specializing in zoning issues and criminal defense.

He’ll be running to fill a vacancy in the 9th Judicial Subcircuit.

In addition to Evanston, the subcircuit includes Rogers Park, Lincolnwood, Skokie, Morton Grove, Wilmette and parts of Niles, Park Ridge, Glenview and Northfield.

In a letter to supporters, Bernstein said he hopes they will help him win votes in those communities where he hasn’t run before.
