Evanston police say a crane pulled up at the Best Western Hotel this morning and workmen completely blocked off the 600 block of Lake Street while the crane lifted a new air conditioning unit to the hotel roof.
Nothing especially unusual about that, except that, police say the crane crew hadn’t gotten city permits for the work.

Police Cmdr. Joseph Dugan says by the time officials discovered the work was underway, the HVAC unit had already been lifted to the hotel roof, so a city traffic engineering staffer took photos and the contractor’s contact information, and they’ll follow up about the permit issue.
The hotel, at 1501 Sherman Ave., has been undergoing renovation for some time now — including new metal sheathing on the facade.
Dugan says the crane company is based in Addison and the HVAC contractor is based in Wheeling.
