Evanston’s annual Bike the Ridge event is underway through 1 p.m. this afternoon.

The one-day event flips the usual rule of the road on the busy artery from which bicycles are normally barred. For a few hours cars are barred from the street and it’s opened up to bicyclists.

Aldermen Ann Rainey and Don Wilson and Mayor Steve Hagerty were among the officials on hand at Howard Street to kick off today’s event.

Ridgeville Park, 908 Seward St., and Alexander Park, at Ridge Avenue and Grove Street, will be centers of activities during the event — with live music, free bike helmets and bike repair services offered.

The road is scheduled to reopen for cars at 2 p.m.
