Tuesday Swim crew dedicated to McGaw YMCA swim lessons

When Dr. Ann Borders and her husband, attorney Will Borders, first moved to Evanston, they asked around about swim lessons for their children. Following a scare with a different child who had fallen into a pool, the Borders knew it was time to give their kids the skills necessary to be safe, and have fun, around water.

Friends recommended McGaw YMCA. So, they enrolled Vera, age 4, in a group swim class that happened to be on Tuesday evenings. Soon after, baby Kate and her mom joined a Parent-Tot swim class, also held on Tuesday evenings.

McGaw YMCA Member's Transformation and Celebration

Two months ago, Susan treated herself to something special: a visit to a spa, complete with massage, to celebrate a milestone that she wouldn’t have thought possible a few years ago.

November 2014 marked her one-year anniversary of maintaining the loss of 85 pounds, thanks to her determination and her membership at the McGaw YMCA.

“It turns out that keeping the weight off was more significant than losing it,” Susan said. “The Y is an integral part of my success. It’s a very supportive environment.”

A new perspective

McGaw's Henry Johnson bids farewell to front desk

Henry (Jonell) Johnson has been a YMCA believer since his days working at the Ann Arbor YMCA in his home state, Michigan.

“Some organizations talk about being purpose-driven, but the Y backs it up – we walk the talk, you could say. And I wanted to be a part of that movement.”

So, he moved to the McGaw YMCA in Evanston. For the past six years, Henry has stood behind the front desk, welcoming McGaw members with an energy many have come to appreciate. Though Saturday is his last day in member relations, Henry will continue to share his talents with McGaw.

McGaw Y hosts International Family Festival

About 600 families gathered Dec. 11 at the International Family Festival hosted by the McGaw YMCA. For over 15 years, the International Family Festival has encouraged children and their families to learn about the many holiday traditions celebrated by different cultures all over the world.

McGaw YMCA kicks off 125th anniversary celebration

This January marks the beginning of a year-long series of celebrations for the McGaw YMCA in Evanston, in commemoration of its 125th anniversary year.
In recognition of its founding year, the McGaw YMCA has lowered all joiner’s fees to $18.85 through the end of January, and has launched a sister website chronicling the organization’s history and archiving related media.

'Y' offers September membership discount

The McGaw YMCA wants you to stay strong and stay healthy.

The economy is placing pressures on us in many ways. There is stress from a variety of sources: personal financial worries; concern for friends or loved ones who might be in difficulties; job insecurity; and constant pressure to live economically without having to sacrifice things that are important to our children and other family members.

To help out the McGaw YMCA is offering 50 percent off the joiner’s fee through Sept. 27 on adult and family memberships and offers adjusted membership rates that work for families of different sizes and different incomes.

More information about YMCA memberships is available online.

McGaw YMCA announces “Stay Strong,” an initiative to prevent its members from losing their membership due to hardship.

The YMCA has been known for its saying that “no one is turned away due to the inability to pay” and the McGaw YMCA is committed to making every effort to ensure that its members do not have to drop their membership during this period of economic turbulence. To this end, the McGaw Y has launched the “Stay Strong,” initiative, a renewed commitment to standing by its members when times are tough. “If someone in your family has lost their job, or been severely impacted by the economy, we’ll work with you to make sure your membership continues.
