The Evanston Township Board this evening voted to name City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz acting township supervisor to replace Gary Gaspard, the elected supervisor who resigned last week five months into his four-year term.

The board, after a half-hour executive session, voted 7-3 in favor of the appointment.

Trustees Judy Fiske, Peter Braithwaite and Don Wilson voted against the move. Wilson and Braithwaite said they wanted to wait at least a week to make the decision.

Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl joined the other six trustees in approving the decision.

Bobkiewicz said he plans to present a plan at next week’s City Council for how the township’s responsibilities would be taken over by the city, if voters approve a binding township dissolution referendum at next spring’s election.

The aldermen recently introduced the referendum proposal and are scheduled to vote on whether to put the referendum on the ballot at their meeting next week.

The board also directed that the city’s health director, Evonda Thomas-Smith, provide day-to-day supervision of the township’s operation under Bobkiewicz’s direction.
