Elise L. Malary.

Evanston police announced Saturday afternoon that the body found in Lake Michigan Thursday is that of a 31-year-old missing Evanston woman.

Elise Malary, who lived in the 700 block of Hinman Avenue, was reported missing to Evanston police on March 11, two days after she’d last had contact with her family.

Her body was found about 4:30 p.m. in the water off Garden Park in the 600 block of Sheridan Square. Evanston firefighters recovered the body from the water, and it was transported to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Until recently Malary had worked in the Civil Rights Bureau of the Illinois Attorney General’s office, and Attorney General Kwame Raoul issued a statement praising her as “a tireless advocate for the LGBTQ community.”

“Her kindness and infectious smile will be missed by those who worked with her,” Raoul added.

Police Cmdr. Ryan Glew says police are continuing to investigate Malary’s death. Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact the Evanston Police Detective Bureau at 847-866-5040 or Text-A-Tip to CRIME (274637) and then start your message with EPDTIP.
