Evanston High School lacrosse alumni will meet the outgoing Wildkit squad for a game tonight after the team closed its season with a playoff loss Wednesday.
Coach Randall Mayne says the alumni squad for the 7 p.m. game at Lazier Field will feature “a healthy contingent of still-actively-playing” alums. It’s the second annual alumni-varsity event.
After being forced by untimely lightning to return home on Tuesday, the Evanston boys lacrosse team endured a second bus trip to the far southwestern suburbs Wednesday for their Illinois Elite 8 playoff game at #3 Benet Academy.
Early in this upset bid, the Wildkits possessed the ball well, but failed to hit those early, confidence-building scoring opportunities.
The Red Wings then asserted control as they have all season to build a 3-0 first quarter lead. Senior Aidan Crowe finished a sharp skip-pass feed from Charlie Cunningham for the Kits’ first goal mid-second quarter.
The final seven minutes of the half remained scoreless – which felt like a momentum shift favoring the visitors. Senior Charlie Cunningham scored first in the third to close the deficit to 4-2 to fuel comeback hopes.
That door was quickly shut as Benet turned it on with a six=goal run to the final 10-2.
The loss closes a solid season for the Wildkits: at 15-5 overall, the best in at least two decades. The seniors leave having set the performance bar a lot higher than they found it.
