Fans of Evanston’s shrinking branch library system spent today celebrating the grand opening of the privately-financed “Mighty Twig” storefront at 900 Chicago Ave.

There were a variety of activities for kids, from making paper flowers to using frosting as glue to put together objects made from pretzels and other fun foods.

And, oh yes, there are books — lots of them for youngsters — along with a selection of magazines and newspapers and some computers.

Members of the Evanston Public Library Friends say they plan to staff the Twig with volunteers from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. And they’re seeking donations to help fund the operation.
