To help community members with their fall cleanup efforts, the City of Evanston’s Streets and Sanitation Division offer four days of free bulk garbage collections.

The days residents can place their bulk trash out for pickup depend upon the days of the week of their normal refuse collections. This fall, residents who normally have their trash, recycling and yard waste collections on Thursdays will have their bulk trash collected on Friday, Sept. 19. Residents with trash collection days on Mondays can set their bulk trash out to be collected on Friday, Sept. 26.

Community members who have their refuse collected on Tuesdays are scheduled to have their bulk trash removed on Friday, Oct. 3; and residents with Wednesday refuse collections will have Friday, Oct. 10 as their bulk trash day.

Please direct questions on Bulk Trash Pickup Days to the Streets and Sanitation Division, (847) 866-2920.

Bulk trash must meet required guidelines in order to be collected by the city on Bulk Trash Days.

Items must be less than six cubic yards per household. Six cubic yards is roughly equivalent to two couches, four chairs, one mattress and box-spring, or 25 medium garbage bags.

Quantities that exceed six cubic yards will be tagged as special pick-ups and a fee will be assessed to the resident’s water bill.

Items must be placed out in an orderly fashion, i.e. bagged, contained or bundled; no loose garbage will be collected.

Absolutely no hazardous materials will be collected, including batteries, gas, oil asbestos, medical wastes, paint, etc. No construction materials, tires or appliances will be picked up.

Crews will only remove bulk items on the advertised dates; no garbage carts will be emptied.

Glass should be broken up, boxed, taped and labeled as glass. Bulk trash must be placed out by 7 a.m. on the alley line or parkway. Crews will not remove items from private property nor return for late set outs.

If crews are unable to complete routes on Fridays, collections will continue on the following Saturdays.

Residents with larger debris removal needs must call Streets and Sanitation to request special pick-ups, (847) 866-2940, or contact SWANCC (847) 390-6820 to request a dumpster. Both of these alternatives involve a charge.
