Sixth Ward Alderman Mark Tendam is warning his constituents of a rash of burglaries in unlocked cars and garages in his northeast Evanston ward.
“Let’s make our neighborhoods less attractive targets,” he advises in an email. “Let’s lock our cars, garages, and houses and keep them locked at all times. If you see unusual or suspicious activity, call the EPD at 911.”
In the past two weeks, he said, 6th Ward residents have reported eight burglaries, all of which involved unlocked cars and garages.
Cmdr. Jay Parrott, media spokesman for Evanston police, confirmed that unlocked cars and garages are easy prey for burglars.
“They walk down the street after dark,” he said, “and try to open car doors and quickly snatch coins, cell phones, and GPS units. If they find garage door openers, they effectively have keys to your house.”
Tendam also recommended that residents call the non-emergency number, (847) 866-5000, to report that someone has burglarized your car or garage, even if nothing has been taken.
“Any information that we can give our police regarding these incidents,” he writes, “will help them track (and hopefully catch) the bad guys.”
