A white Subaru Outback went out of control on Hinman Avenue shortly after 4 p.m. this afternoon, hit a tree and ended up on the lawn in front of the Mather Lifeways building just north of Davis Street.

Clusters of Mather residents gathered on the sidewalk to watch as a tow truck driver worked to remove the vehicle, as did a group of pre-school children standing across the street.

Update 7:42 p.m.: Fire Division Chief Dwight Hohl says the driver of the car was taken to Evanston Hospital for evaluation but that she didn’t have any obvious injuries.

He says it appears the driver may have mistakenly hit the accelerator instead of the brake.

No other cars were involved in the accident.

  1. Drivers – Slow Down Please…

This is the second such story I've read on Evanston Now this week.  Such stories are showing up all too frequently and are the byproduct of irresponsible drivers traveling at too high a rate of speed for our streets.  We live in a highly-populated area and the frequency of these accidents (as reported over the past several weeks on is increasing the odds that one of these drivers hits a pedestrian walking down a sidewalk.
